Packing for a move is no small task. Whether moving into a storage unit or relocating across the country, keeping your belongings protected and organized is essential to a successful move. Bluebird Self Storage has put together some insider tips to help you simplify your packing and moving process, allowing you to transport your things confidently.
Preparing To Pack
- Schedule time to pack. Plan ample time to pack your things to stay organized and efficient without feeling rushed. Start packing long before you need to since it will always take longer than anticipated.
- Prepare your supplies. Before packing, you should have made all your trips to your home improvement store. Have boxes, packing paper, Bubble Wrap, packing tape, furniture covers, and marker pens ready.
- Plan a moving truck. Don’t assume you’ll be able to get a moving truck last minute—schedule one ahead of time.
Keeping Organized
- Slap on a label. Mark boxes on every side denoting what belongings they are storing, taking particular care to clearly label any box holding fragile items. Keep a list of what’s already been packed and what still needs packing.
- Keep boxes small. Boxes should be small enough to carry comfortably, especially for any box carrying hefty items, and weigh no more than 30 pounds each. Fill excess space in boxes with packing materials.
- Store inside drawers. To save on space, store smaller items inside dressers, refrigerators, and other furniture pieces with space inside. Remember to line any fragile items with Bubble Wrap or towels for protection.
Protecting Your Belongings
- Pad it up. Any furniture legs should be wrapped with Bubble Wrap or protective pads to avoid scratching during your move. Fragile items like plates and glassware must be individually wrapped and cushioned with packing paper, stacking plates on edge. Pad wall décor, including mirrors, artwork, and picture frames, and store them in large boxes.
- Keep it under cover. Cover wooden furniture, upholstery, and mattresses with furniture covers or plastic bags.
- Seal boxes tight. Use packing tape to cover the edges of all box flaps to keep out dust during your move and storage.
- Hang up your clothes. Hang clothes and draperies in wardrobe boxes to help them stay in good condition.
- Ready any appliances. Clean and dry all appliances, taping shut doors during transport. Moveable parts need to be padded with packing paper.
